Persistence Pays Off
It was New Year's Day 2015. I noticed a mole on the outside on my right ankle that looked like melanoma. Being a surgeon I asked one of my colleagues, a plastic surgeon, to biopsy it for me. He didn't think it was a melanoma but after my persistence he biopsied it. It was a melanoma. I underwent a wide local excision afterwards and luckily it was Stage 1a.
Two years later... I have been diagnosed again with Stage 1a melanoma from my back this time. I am now awaiting the results of gene testing. Once those results are back... well we will see I guess. Really not sure if I want to know if I am at an increased risk for metastatic disease within the next five years. Hopefully the GINA legislation will protect my future insurability and employment.
We will see.....
