Beware of money hungry hospitals!

I just want to put this out there for everyone facing Mohs for basal cell to consider. I had a very small bump on the inner corner of my eye towards the bridge of my nose. The size of a pin head. I had it biopsied and sure enough it was basal cell (not the first for me). I went to a very large, famous hospital in Cleveland (you've all heard of it). The mohs surgeon consulted with me and set an appt for the surgery. He then wanted me to go the following day to a plastic surgeon for closure. That plastic surgeon wanted to give me a general anesthesia for the closure. Of course, before they do that you have to go to the hospital for pre-op, where they do bloodwork, etc. I was really getting worried about how much all this was going to cost me, but I knew it had to be done. But really? Was knocking me out necessary?...anyway, I went along with it. An act of God intervention happened because the day before my mohs surgery their office called me saying the dr. was sick and they couldn't schedule me for a month or more. I was so frustrated that I went to a different group (not the large Cleveland hospital) and had a consult. The mohs surgeon was so nice and reassuring. He said he highly doubted I would need plastic surgery once he was done, and he would close it himself the same time. And by no means would I need to be put under general anesthesia! I told him what the other surgeon was going to do and he just said, well, they got to make up a lot of money they lost during covid! Long story short, it pays to get a few opinions. He got the basal cell in the first swoop, and I went back yesterday (7 days later) and had the 3 small stitches removed. I'm so happy I was saved by the first dr. getting ill and canceling my appointment, other wise I'd be paying thousands of dollars more and my body would have gone through the stress of the anesthesia!1 week after mohs

  1. I am so glad things worked out in your favor. Those second opinions can truly make all the difference. I hope healing has gone well for you and scarring is minimal. Please keep us posted on your progress! This community is here for you any time!
