Not sure if this is normal (photo)

Hey Everyone!

I am new here. I had a mole start to pop up over the summer (live in Florida and am 39). I didn’t think much of it but it has gotten a bit bigger but still smaller than a pencil eraser. It does tend to itch off and on. I have an appointment with my primary but he can’t get me in till late December and my insurance requires a referral to see a dermatologist. Does this look suspicious to anyone? It is located on the back of my knee so hard to photograph and see. Back of knee

  1. ...Welcome to the community! We are so glad to have you!

While we can't diagnose, we can tell you about our own experiences with similar spots and lesions. I can tell you that most of my skin cancers have been slightly itchy and appeared as dry spots that didn't heal. The only melanoma I have had was a dark and irregularly shaped mole.

I think you are doing a great job of being proactive and starting the process with your family doctor. It's always a good idea to have suspicious spots checked out. Your family doctor may even be able to do a biopsy for you. My family doctor diagnosed my melanoma with a biopsy and was able to get me into a dermatologist quickly for an excision.

I am including a link to a handy graphic -- it seems like you are already being careful and watching for many of the signs.
