Words from Dr. Wiese: What Is a Dermascope?

Dr. Ben Wiese explains how dermatologists and skin cancer physicians use dermascopes, or dermatoscopes, in their examinations of their patients.

What is a dermascope?

A dermascope is a handheld instrument that is often used to diagnose skin cancer. It magnifies lesions for visibility and allows for polarized views of the skin. A dermatologist or skin cancer physician uses a dermascope, or dermatoscope, to examine their patient's skin, during a procedure called a dermoscopy.
