Bowens disease v SCC

Hi everyone, my skin dr finally rang today and said the biopsy near my ear shows I have Bowens disease.

I’d never heard of it.
Of what I can gather it’s SCC in situ.” Why do they call it bowens?

I am to use efudex twice a day for 4 weeks.
Would be a whole lot quicker to just cut it out.

  1. Hi ,
I have never heard that either, but I found this info:
“Squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SCCIS) is a superficial growth of cancerous cells on the skin’s outer layer. It is not a severe condition but could develop into a full form of invasive skin cancer if not detected early or well managed. It is also known as carcinoma in situ in the literature or as Bowen disease after John T. Bowen, an American dermatologist who first described the condition in 1912."1 (https://skincancer.net/life-with-skin-cancer/keep-getting-skin-cancer)
As far as using the Efudex instead of surgery, it'd be best for you to discuss those treatment options with your doctor as we cannot provide any medical advice.

    1. Sorry Christine if I worded it wrong, I wasn’t after medical advice at all , I was just wondering if anyone else had heard about bowens disease.

      1. , and I’m sorry if I misunderstood! Thank you for clarifying 😀 I had not heard of Bowen’s disease before. Learn something new everyday, as they say.
        All the best,

    2. One more question for those using efudex.
I have been using the cream as advised by my skin dr for a week today and nothing has happened yet. No reaction at all. How long does it take to start bring out the scc?
I used aldara a few years ago and had a reaction within two/three days.

      1. Hi ,
That’d be a good question for your doctor! Efudex seems to have different effects on different people based on how much, where, and for how long it is applied. Thought you may find this article insightful: https://skincancer.net/life-with-skin-cancer/efudex-side-effects.
Keep us updated if you’d like! We love to hear from you.
        Well wishes,

      2. I used it for 5 days and then a slow reaction to really red spots by day 14.

    3. Well I’d did speak too soon . The treated area near my ear finally bought out the bowens disease and also another couple spots near it. But they’re not bothering me at all.
The chin is a whole new experience, I decided to treat a small AK at the same time . One small spot has spread to my whole chin. I am one week post treatment. My chin looks like an outback paddock In a drought 😳 its bright red and has cracks/splits oh and the worse part is after a shower when it dries out what the heck, ouch, it hurts to eat, drink, smile and laugh. But luckily on the down side so won’t be long and my chin will be healed.
