Is Efudex a pro or a con?

  1. ...I am guessing you have been prescribed Efudex or are discussing it as an option. I can tell you that, for me, the pros are worth the cons--if that makes sense.

I have used Efudex since 2014 and have had very good results each time. My dermatologist prescribes it for treatment of actinic keratoses on my face and chest. Each time I've treated, I have had great results--the precancerous spots have been removed. This has ultimately resulted in having to use it less frequently over the years--always a good thing!

As far as cons, there are several. The side effects of Efudex can be overwhelming for many users. Most of us are told that using it results in something like a sunburn, but that isn't always the case. It can be very painful and unsightly for a few weeks for most users.

There are some other side effects experienced by many users like nausea, headaches, and fatigue.

If you are hesitant about beginning Efudex, I would suggest having a conversation with your doctor about possible spot-treating a smaller area to see how the cream affects your system.

I am including a few articles that might help you as you weigh options.
