efudex side effects

Today's day 15 of Efudex treatment. Initially was told to apply for 1-2 wks or until "redness/crusting" occurred. Called doc asking if should continue treatment as have lots of bright red tenderness, but no "eroding". Nurse (or assistant?) said to extend treatment. I then mentioned the fatigue, headaches & diarrhea have been concerning. Nurse responded that none of that would be from using Efudex, because it's just a "topical cream". Not sure how to interpret this. My symptoms certainly seem associated with the treatment, but she was adamant that they couldn't be. While looking for answers I found your group. Has anyone else experienced similar symptoms? (By the way, thanks for being there. Been feeling kinda' lost & overwhelmed.....)

  1. Hi - thank you for sharing your experience with Efudex so far. I'm sorry to hear about some of the symptoms you're having! While we cannot provide medical advice for your own safety, I did want to share a few articles we have from our patient leaders about Efudex side effects/symptoms and the erosion stage: https://skincancer.net/topical-chemotherapy-guide, https://skincancer.net/life-with-skin-cancer/tips-for-efudex-users, https://skincancer.net/life-with-skin-cancer/efudex-cream-how-long, https://skincancer.net/life-with-skin-cancer/efudex-erosion-stage. I hope you can find some helpful info here. I will say from what our community members have shared about their Efudex journeys, the symptoms can be brutal. Have you considered getting a second opinion from a different doctor? It may be helpful to hear a different perspective since your current doctor is adamant your symptoms are unrelated to the treatment. What do you think? All the best, Alexa (SkinCancer.net moderator)
