How do you keep yourself from picking or scratching in your sleep?

I have really itchy spots on the back of my skull, from shingles. Since the shingles numbed the area where they were, it is easy to scratch too much and not feel it and make it worse. Same would hold true for an itchy spot resulting from Mohs surgery. I put on mittens and went to sleep...and woke up with the mittens off and "catching myself" scratching really hard! Any ideas welcome! Ronni (skincancer.net moderator)

  1. Sorry, I cannot offer anything. I have never had Mohs surgery—-only excision and shave excision. And itching has not been an issue.

    1. would taking an antihistamine help? I get hives with extreme temp changes (which happens often in South Florida - going outside then inside pretty much anywhere)! The hives itch and Zyrtec takes the urge to itch away. I've used it for years with no bad effect. I would suggest having someone wrap your hands with ace bandage, but you could still rub the itch. When asleep it's almost out of your control..🙁 Alternately, would wearing a swim cap help? I hated them as a kid, but they did make it hard to get to the scalp! All the best wishes for relief soon.

      1. Thanks for your thoughtful answer. I must be getting too desensitized to antihistamines because I take Zyrtec AND Atarax and I still itch. I'm glad you have found some relief though...and as for a swim cap, I think I have too much hair. Maybe I should put on an old fashioned shower cap, but then even when half asleep I would figure out how to get under it. As for your temp changes in South Florida, that does indeed sound challenging because it only happens here in the summer and that is bad enough!
