Allergy to surgical glue used in Mohs

I just had a SCC removed from my right shoulder two weeks ago via Mohs. Thankfully, I only needed one pass, unlike some others in the waiting area who were on pass three when I left. After a few days, I started itching and thought it was just from the procedure. After about ten days, hives started appearing around the steri strips. Since they were about to fall off anyway, I took them off completely and was surprised to see red, raw blistered skin underneath! I had my stitches removed this morning, and the tech said I had a severe reaction to Mastisol and that’s what caused all of the itching and redness. She suggested using Aquaphor to treat it.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, for future surgeries (considering this was my fourth skin cancer procedure and I’m sure there will be more), what could be an alternative? The itching had been agony!

  1. ouch, that sounds really painful. I’m sorry you are having to deal with that in addition to your recent surgery. If you do need to undergo additional surgeries, your doctor should be able to provide alternatives to mastisol. There are other products such as Dermabond, but your doctor would know which option would work best for your particular case. I hope the remainder of your recovery is uneventful and everything heals nicely. Wishing you well, Julie (team member)
