Has anyone had reconstructive surgery or scar treatments after Mohs?

We've heard a wide range of community member experiences with further treatments after Mohs surgery. Share your experiences with reconstructive surgery or scar treatments after completing Mohs surgery so we can all learn from one another!

  1. I have had two BCC removed with Mohs surgery on my face. One was on the side of my nose and the other on my forehead. The Mohs was done at my dermatologist office in the morning. I then went to a plastic surgeon several hours later for the closure surgery. It has healed without too much of a scar.

    1. I have had two MOHS procedures, both on my face, both on my nose in the same area. The cancer came back after seven years. All of the doctors were very surprised because it’s very rare for this type of cancer (Morpheaform) to return after a Mohs procedure. My first scar was not too bad it healed very nicely. It was done by a plastic surgeon I used to work for. My latest reconstruction surgery which was in March of 2019, was done by a plastic surgeon at a well known cancer hospital where I had the most procedure done. Unfortunately after the Mohs procedure, the hole on the side of my nose was larger than a quarter size and I had to have a double flap. Being that I had already had a flap seven years prior, the skin was already tight and now is extremely tight and my nose stays red due to the Capillaries. I have what looks like a peace sign scar down my nose, but it is healing, and I am using a silicone ointment on it.

I always use sunscreen and wear a hat when I can. My doctor just found two more BCCs, which he biopsied just yesterday, and depending on the type of cancer, I may be having a couple more MOHS procedures. One is on my face, but thankfully not in my nose area. One side of my nose does not look the same as the other, but I am thankful that I actually have most all my nose, because if the cancer had grown down more rather than going across my nose, I would’ve lost the entire bottom part, according to the surgeons.

      1. I had Mohs surgery on the side of my nose--both the removal and the plastic surgery were done at the same time. I have a snaking scar down my nose which at 70 years old I consider a badge of honor (I survived!). If I ever have to have it again, I will ask for calming drugs before the surgery as the numbing shots to my face were excruciating and it all happened right before my eyes, so to speak. I still shudder. Either that, or I'll take a stiff drink before hand!

        1. ...you are so right about the need for something to calm the nerves! I have always wondered why it isn't standard procedure. Mohs is quite an ordeal and watching it is incredibly difficult.

I admire your outlook on your scar and what it means to you. Survivor indeed!

Thank you for sharing your story with us! I am wishing you many more all-clears from your dermatologist!
