Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT) Experiences

Has anyone had superficial radiation therapy (SRT) to treat their skin cancer? What was your experience like? Share in this forum!

  1. I am starting SRT for a Basel cell on my upper lip. I’m also interested in hearing about others who have done this.

    1. ...I hope treatment is going well! While I haven't had SRT, one of our advocates shared an article that details one patient's positive experience with it. I am sharing the link in hopes it answers some of your questions. https://skincancer.net/life-with-skin-cancer/superficial-radiation-therapy

  2. Hello! I had SRT treatment on my forehead. What I didn’t realize until post treatment was that the dermatologist did not use image guided technology, also known as IG SRT. It is my understanding that you cannot have the area treated with radiation again if it does not work. Anyway, the basal cell came back shortly after the end of my SRT treatment (15 visits). I then went to a dermatologist in Manhattan who used a YAG laser to treat the area. I went for 7 different treatments and it finally worked. Good luck with your treatment.

    1. I just finished IG SRT treatments on the side of my nose and it looks to be cleared up. Will go in for a follow up visit in early June. This will be about 8 weeks after the last of 21 treatments. The area looks like normal skin with no indication of BCC after about 1 1/2 years. It took longer than it should have to find a dermatologist that did Image Guided Superficial Radio Therapy. As it was, it involved a one hour ride each way from my home. The IGSRT treatment is not yet widely spread. There was and I suppose still is some resistance from some Dermatology practices that prefer the MOHS surgery. The IGSRT was covered by my health insurance with, of course, a small copay. I am happy with the result. No cutting, scarring, pain or downtime other than the visits, which took approximately 20 minutes each, in and out.

      1. Hi . I am glad you didn't give up on finding a dermatologist who could help. I hope your follow-up goes well and that you are declared cancer-free. Thanks for sharing your experience. Please keep us posted, if you don't mind. Sending lots of health vibes your way. - Lori (Team Member)
