Terrible guilt my child got sunburn

I’ve always been so careful with my children applying suncream covering up, however I wasn’t careful enough last week my child got sun burn on their shoulders and back it was red and then peeled. Back to normal without no peel after 4 days. I am
Just so worried as I’ve read that one episode of sunburn in childhood can double their risk of melanoma is their anything a can do 🙂‍↕️I know the damage has been done but just hoping for advice thanks x

  1. Have you or someone in your family had skin cancer? You seem quite worried and also mention melanoma, making me think you have some type of experiance with skin cancer.

Melanoma is of course the most dangerous, but, thankfully the least common of the skin cancers. Sun exposure does increase your chance of skin cancers, even melanoma. However, the other types of skin cancer are most likely related to sun exposure. Melonoma is also, but can show up in areas that the sun never shines. Mine have mostly all been in areas not overly exposed to the sun.

All anyone can do, is to do the things that you can control. There is nothing you can do now, it is done. It is only a 2 percent chance of anyone ever getting melanoma. So it is very unlikely they will get it.

I would say this to anyone, be aware of your skin, know what spots you have and keep track of them, that way you know when they change. Most all skin cancers are noticed and brought to the attention of the doctor by the patient themself. Also, keep your vitamin D and Vitamin B3 (niacinamide) levels up, they help with some skin cancers. After that, just go out and enjoy life to the fullest. That is all we can do.
