Does freezing precancerous areas work as well as the chemo cream?

Hi. I go to dermatologist every 6 months. I was told to put fluorouracil on just precancerous areas, once a night. I usually have the areas zapped or frozen. Not sure what to do after reading reviews. Still, the precancer comes back but in different areas. I had an area from the nose and side of the head removed. I've been seeing a dermatologist since 2005. I didn't use sunblock growing up, and I was outside a lot playing sports. I always got out of the sun when I could, after about 15 minutes. Paying for it today. So does freezing precancerous areas work as well as the chemo cream?

  1. ...I am so sorry you are dealing with precancerous lesions. Know that your story is a familiar one to many, and you are not alone.

Chemo creams and freezing are both used to treat precancerous spots. I can tell you from experience that my dermatologist froze spots every time I visited and finally suggested chemo cream as a way to treat a large area at once. Both treatments will rid your skin of precancerous spots, but each has its downside. Chemo creams have many reported side effects, and freezing leaves a small scar. Your dermatologist should be able to answer any questions and address your concerns about which one is right for your situation. Both treatments can be used to spot treat.

Your story is a familiar one, for sure. There are many of us who weren't wise about sunscreen. We know better now and can advocate for others to be more vigilant.

Please keep us updated on your treatment and the results. I am including a couple articles on Efudex (fluorouracil) that might be helpful as you move forward.

    1. Hi. Thanks for your reply. I will look at the links.
So dentist told me today I have sun damage on my lips. Now that’s new.
So the dermatologist said the cream does not affect skin without cancer. Is that correct?
Seems from the videos it kills all skin on areas cream applied.
I am getting a second opinion.
I just didn’t like the approach from the pa. Not sure I’ve seen the actual Dermatologist there yet.
      Thanks again.
