Did I make the right decision!

I just started Fluorouracil (sp?) today for a small squamous cell carcinoma in situ on my nose. I was scheduled ffor MOHS, but couldn’t stand the thought of it. I’ve done a lot of treatment and doctor shopping over the past month since I was diagnosed, and I finally found a derma who was willing to prescribe the chemo cream. After reading this site, I’m wondering whether I made a mistake not to just go in for the MOHS, but I know several people who have had it, and based on my very small sample, I concluded that MOHS complications are very frequent. I also ran into a lot of ads for “Gentle Cure” a radiological procedure that’s not available in our area. I suppose I’ll go ahead with the cream….
I do have one question: when I get into the skin erosion phase on my nose, can I wear a loose-fitting surgical mask to cover my nose when I’m in public?

I know, I know, this is not for the feint of heart, but here I am…

  1. Hi . You decided on a treatment that was most comfortable for you after doing research and taking the experiences of others into consideration. We are not medical experts, so I can't say whether you did the right thing from that perspective, but, from a more personal perspective, it sounds like you made the right decision for you. Here is a wonderful forum post about wearing a mask while treating the nose area: https://skincancer.net/forums/fluorouracil-nose-mask. If you look in the comments, you will see advice from one of our health leaders about using a mask spacer to prevent irritation, which might be an issue for you if you choose to wear one. I hope this helps and that the treatment is successful. We're here for you if you need us. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Thank you, Lori. I will read up on mask spacers - good idea. The main reason I am using the Covid-type paper mask is that I have allergy issues and frequently feel the need to wipe or scratch my nose. The mask just gives me a reminder to keep my hands away from the area I’m treating. I appreciate the suggestion.

      1. That is such a great idea. I hope you find a way to make the mask work for you. - Lori (Team Member)
