"Shut Up About the Sun!"

“Shut up about the Sun! SHUT UP about the SUN!” If you know, you know, right? This is an iconic quote by Gabe from The Office, and it’s spoken with as much vehemence as it appears to in print. It’s a double-edged sword for me. I love it, and it makes me crack up every time I even think about it. On the other hand, I can see it in a completely different context. I am afraid a frighteningly similar phrase runs through the minds of those around me when I mention skin cancer and sunscreen. I hope not, but I am sure for many it’s true.

Sorry, not sorry

I don’t set out to be “that” person. Nobody wants to be the one who is always harping on the same subject and giving advice that may or may not be wanted. That being said, I may be her. No. I’m almost certain I am. When I see an opportunity to warn others about the dangers of UV rays, I tend to jump in and grab it.

No matter the situation, I'll have some advice to offer

Going fishing? I’m going to remind you to reapply sunscreen. Planning a vacation? I will offer some suggestions for indoor activities during the heat of midday. Get a sunburn? I’ll tell you what you can use to soothe it while giving you some suggestions for sunscreen brands I trust. Say you’re too pale? I will tell you that pale skin is healthy skin and to be proud of who you are.

If I made you think twice, I accomplished something

I hate to think there are folks out there who cringe when they see me coming, but I am sure I know a few. You know what? I’m sorry that I make anyone feel that way, but I’m not sorry if it makes them think twice before tanning or overexposing themselves to the sun.

Advantages of social media in advocacy

Social media helps people like me speak up when we can’t use our words. When I feel like I am reaching shut-up-about-the-sun levels with those around me, I just switch gears. My Facebook newsfeed is a great place to share information and tips, send out regular warnings about sun safe practices, and post pictures of the consequences of tanning. Most days, it’s the easiest way to advocate. The more I talk about the sun, the more likely someone is to take note--that’s all I really want in the end.

Advocacy matters

Whether it’s little sunscreen reminders, the SPF decal on my car’s back window, or a brief mention of my recent squamous cell surgery, I advocate whenever and however I can. I am especially passionate about tanning beds and don’t hold back when I hear others talking about using them.

I owe a lot to tanning beds

They are, after all, a huge part of the reason I have had multiple skin cancer surgeries and a neverending onslaught of precancers. I would choose sunscreen over sun exposure every time, and I will never not advocate for that.

So yeah, sorry Gabe, but I won’t shut up about the sun any time soon.
