Healing after using Efudex on arms/hands

I’m hoping to get some advice or even reassurance. I used Efudex cream on my arms and back of my hands for almost 3 weeks. I am now 1 month into my healing phase. I had a big response to the treatment and I am told that is good. My skin has healed a lot but I still have a huge amount of redness and blotchiness. I have been using Vaseline 2 times a day and it isn’t itchy or dry. The redness seems deep. I’m scared that it will never go away. I’m hoping that I just need to give it time 🙏🏻. I would appreciate any reassurance or advice if anyone has any. This is quite the journey and I have appreciated reading others experiences. Thank you!!

  1. I apologize for not seeing your post and responding earlier. I am so sorry you are dealing with the healing phase--it is always the most challenging phase for me.

I am sure by now you have moved past the most difficult part. Yes, doctors do say that big reactions are a good sign that the cream has done its job. The redness can be scary--I understand that feeling all too well. I am attaching two articles that might help you as you move forward and continue to heal.

It can feel like your skin will never again look the same, but I assure you it will look normal again--but those precancerous spots will be gone!

    1. thank you so much!! That reassurance is just what I needed. I appreciate you taking the time. Take Care!!!!

  2. I have used efudex a number of times. The first time was on my face and the redness lasted longer than i wanted(2-3 months). My dermo was correct when he said my skin after efudex would be as smooth as a baby's butt. It was that statement that made the ordeal worth it! The redness went away and i was happy with results

    1. that's so great to hear! I know how difficult it is to believe you will ever look normal again. The scabbing and redness is truly an experience.

      Wishing you all the best!
