IG-SRT in NYC? IG-SRT 100 vs IG-SRT 100 Vision?

I'm investigating treatment for basal cell carcinomas on nose and face. 3 dermatologists at a major NYC Manhattan hospital did not mention IG-SRT as an option, nor did they even know about it. How could that be?? But I did find places in New Jersey. Are there any drs/hospital in NYC that offer this? And is SRT the same as IG-SRT? And is the newer version of the machine-Sensus SRT 100 Vision much better that the older Sensus SRT 100? Thanks for any clarification/tips.

  1. Hi . I see that it has been a few months since you first posted this. I wanted to check in and see whether you got any answers or decided on treatment. I did find this article about IGSRT: https://skincancer.net/life-with-skin-cancer/image-guided-srt. It explains the difference between SRT and image-guided SRT. I hope you found someone to perform the procedure and that you are now cancer-free. Wishing you the best. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Yes I just finished 10 SRT-100 (not IG) treatments . My nose is supposed to turn redder and is feeling stuffed and sometimes runny. THe dr can't tell if they got it all, but they say it is effective. How can they tell? So it's a wait and see in years to come i suppose. It feels mysterious and not as exact as other medical treatments. Didn't hurt or feel anything, it was easy. It was hard to find this machine and it was weird that big hospitals and cancer centers did not use it. Even my dermatologist did not know about it or even recommend radiation for me. So I am wondering if I made a mistake by listening to a radiation oncologist instead of a dermatologist? Thank you for the articles--Ive spoken to 3 radiation oncologists and this machines seems to be somewhat controversial in terms of its financing for drs/hospitals and effectiveness.

    2. Hi . It sounds like you made the best possible choice based on the information you have. It does seem strange that your doctor was unaware of it. I wonder if that has something to do with hospital privileges and that kind of thing. Waiting can be hard, really hard, but I hope you eventually find that the treatment was effective and that you are free of skin cancer. 2. I have an appointment with a dermatologist that has medical device that treats non melanoma skin cancers using image guided superficial radio therapy. I live in Northern California and have found only three, maybe four Dermatology Practices within a 5 hour drive that do the IG SRT treatment. My first consultation is at the end of this month. I have a BCC on my nose that I have been treating myself for about 8 months and look forward the possibility of a complete treatment and cure.
I just found SkinCancer.net and look forward to learning more. It may well be the best resource for those of us wondering what to do about our Skin Cancers. Thank you for being there. Doug

    1. Hi Doug (). Welcome to the community! I'm glad you found us and that you are finding the community to be helpful. I hope the treatment is effective and that your cancer is gone for good. 3. Lori, Thank you for your message. I will let you know how it goes. Doug

    1. Hi I completed 10 treatments of the Sensus SRT-100 superficial radiation therapy machine in a major NYC hospital -- the only hospital in NYC that had this machine.(which is weird that only 1 hospital had it) It was for 2 close basal cell carcinomas on my nose. The machine pointed a plastic cone with a diameter of about an inch or so on the area of my nose. At the end of the 2 weeks of treatments the area of treatment plus a little skin near it turned very red and itchy for about 3 weeks or so and is still red but getting lighter. The skin is rougher and harder b ut I hope that is temporary. It looks like i have a red nose from a bad cold. They cant really tell if it worked because my bumps were very small. The only method that lets you know they got out all the cancerous spots is the Mohs, but I knew that from the start. So I hope this turns out OK---my research said they only like to do this method for older people because there is slight chance that it could come back in 20 years...Another dr just told me that his hospital (another major NYC hospital) will not get new equipment if they dont think it works very well. So I'm just hoping it all turns out OK. Now I'm thinking there must be a reson why the other hospitals dont have it. This was not the IG-SRT but just the SRT-100--i did not find anyone local with the IG-SRT.

      1. Hi . Thanks for chiming in with your experience. I hope the treatment was effective and that your cancer never returns. You make a good point about the reluctance of hospitals to invest in the equipment. That and the risk of recurrence are factors that are worth weighing against the benefits of IG SRT treatment for anyone who is considering it. I imagine it might take a few more weeks for you to heal, but I hope you heal fully. Please check in if you don't mind and let us know how you are doing. Warm wishes. - Lori (Team Member)
