Missed 5 Efudex treatments, should I let the area heal first or start treatment again?

I am currently treating my arms with the Fluorouracil (Efudex). This is the 3rd area of my body that I need to treat. I did a total of 11 treatments and had a major reaction very soon. My cream ran out and I missed 5 treatments before I got my refill and now in the healing phase. I'm not sure if I should start back with the treatments or if I need to let the area heal completely before I start again in order to get the full time recommended by my doctor?

  1. ...I know you are frustrated. It is difficult to know what to do with a treatment that has this type of an effect on your skin and your system.

Since you missed 5 applications, that definitely put you into healing so I am sure you are experiencing some intense effects. I wouldn't suggest picking up where you left off at this point due to the fact that you would be beginning on already tender and partially healed skin.

I would suggest you contact your doctor's office and explain the situation and how many applications you have missed. Your doctor may also want to see some photos of the healing skin to get a good idea of how soon you can treat it again.

This is the first time I have run into this question, and I am interested in hearing how your doctor approaches it. Please keep us updated on your results! Wishing you all the best!

    1. I went to my Doctor today and he said to stop applying cream to areas that were weeping, to avoid infection. He said to keep applying elsewhere and when the crusty areas stopped weeping, start again and give them another hit. I'm not saying to do that, just giving you my story, in case it helps you.

      1. ...Thank you for sharing your experience with us! We are all so different in our experiences, and our doctors have such varying advice on this treatment. We appreciate you as a community member! I hope you get some wonderful results from your treatment. I am including an article on the healing phase that may help you as you move forward.
