My mole Biopsy

Hi, everyone, My name is Dave, thank you for reading this post.
Anyway, last Friday, I went for a dermatology routine full-body scan. I think it was the first body skin scan I have ever had. Anyway, I am 62 years of age and had a routine physical 7 weeks ago, which was all positive. However, during my full skin body exam, the dermatologist I have seen for the first time noticed a very suspicious-looking mole on my lower left leg. It is an atypical mole that I believe I have had for at least 20 years. It is odd-looking, but I have never been concerned about it. It may have changed over time a bit, but I have had no real symptoms. Anyway, the Dermatologist said he was concerned about it and wanted to do a biopsy to check for melanoma. So I had a biopsy last Friday, and since today is Wednesday, I have not heard back from Dermatology regarding my mole yet. The Doctor stated that it would take 3 or 4 days to hear back. I called dermatology today to ask if the result was in, they said it was still pending. Is that normal? Does it mean it is Bad news? Anyway, I am literally freaking out now, awaiting the result. Should I have heard back by now if it tested benign? What are the odds it is melanoma? My concern is Melanoma, and since I have had this atypical dark mole for so long, wouldn't that cancer have already spread throughout my body? I feel fine and do Peloton Biking daily. I haven't lost weight, still eat well, but now I am terrified. Are they waiting to inform me about the biopsy longer because I have melanoma? Sorry, but I am freaking out with anxiety!

  1. ...I am sorry you are dealing with so much anxiety following your biopsy. I completely understand.

It is not uncommon to wait up to a week or so for results from a biopsy. In my case, my doctor will generally call if the biopsy shows skin cancer. If the sample is fine, they send a letter or post an update in their clinic's app. I know it's difficult, but try not to worry that you haven't heard any news yet.

Also, know that every atypical mole is not melanoma. You have taken appropriate steps and seen a doctor who was also proactive--you are on the right track, and it sounds like you are receiving great care, staying healthy, and feeling good. Those are all great things!

I am including an article one of our advocates wrote on biopsy anxiety.
