What is the best painkiller to use after Efudex?

Hi, I have sun-damaged tissue on my lips that is being treated with Efudex. I had to stop because I was given confusing instructions and used too much. As a result, my mouth now feels like it's on fire. I saw a doctor yesterday who prescribed antibiotics just because he was worried about infection.

Can anyone tell me what they feel is the best pain killer to use? It's strange. One minute they feel ok (with a bit of vaseline or similar) then suddenly the pain kicks in and it makes me feel physically sick. Any suggestions welcome.

  1. Hi ,

Thanks for submitting your question! Efudex can have different side effects for each person especially in regards to pain and irritation. Other members have shared that since the lips are very sensitive, they weren't able to use the cream for a longer amount of time.

In April's article, she gives a few tips for Efudex users: https://skincancer.net/life-with-skin-cancer/tips-for-efudex-users/ She mentions that alternating acetaminophen and ibuprofen helped with both the pain and inflammation. Also, cold packs and cool cloths helped to temporarily numb the pain. There's a few other great tips in the article that you may find helpful!

Please keep us posted and let us know how you're doing. We're sending positive wishes your way!

    Warmly,

    1. Hi Sidney, thanks so much for replying. And thanks for the advice, I am very pleased to say that I am very much on the mend and managing the pain much better now. Thanks again and take care. Johnnie

  2. ...this is a great question, and I am so glad you shared it for others to see. I am so sorry you are coping with Efudex in addition to a lack of clear instructions. I can't imagine how frustrated you must be by this point.

Even with a thin layer, you can expect to have a good bit of itching and discomfort. It definitely sounds like you may have applied more than was neccessary, and I am glad you are dealing with the possiblity of infection. That is important when your skin is raw and exposed from the effects of Efudex.

I will just piggyback off what Sidney already suggested and say, yes, alternating Tylenol and ibuprofen helps a great deal with the pain. If you are struggling to sleep, I would recommend Benadryl (oral) for the itch and discomfort, as well.

As far as the nausea, I have heard many suggest using ginger. I know your sick feeling probably stems from the pain as much as anything, but ginger is a natural way to combat some of the nausea you may experience.

Know that we are here for you any time. I am wishing you well as you move forward. As Sidney said, we would love for you to keep us posted on our progress.

Sending you hugs! April, SkinCancer.net, Moderator
