Weird thing on my head/scalp

Hello,

Yesterday while lying in the soffa my girlfriend looked into my hair and found a very weird "skin thing" that is about 7 mm in size. It scared the hell out of me when i saw it the photography she took of it. I am almost in a panic state now. I will book a doctors appointment asap to check it out. But until then, am i worrying to much? It just seems to look so damn "destructive".

I am only 37 years of age and not a huge fan of being in the sun to be honest. So it feels kinda weird i have that under all of my hair, because i do have a lot of hair as well.

If not malignant, what could it be?

  1. ...I am so sorry--I know how stressful it can be to wait on a doctor's diagnosis. You are being proactive by making an appointment. It's always best to have any new spot checked out. While we can't diagnosis for you, we can tell you that skin cancer takes many different forms. Some spots that look harmless can require surgery and treatment while others that look terribly menacing turn out to be harmless moles. Your doctor will like biopsy the spot in order to give you a definitive answer. I am including an article on biopsies you might find useful as you prepare for your visit. I am also including an article on self-exams. Regular self-checks will be suggested by your doctor, I'm sure. In the meantime, try to stay calm and be positive. I know it is easier said than done, but know that this community is here for you!

    1. Thank you for the reply and kind words April.

I was in contact with our local medical centre, they referred me to their online service to start looking at it very soon.

After creating a case and uploading around 5 images with different lightning conditions and angles i got an answer a few hours later. They say that it is seborroic keratosis and that it does not need any treatment. Very happy to get such a positive message from the doctor. But also uncertain of however i should leave it at that, it does seem a bit "lackluster" and unsafe to make a call just from those images. There is probably a possibility to drive this further and have a real check at it. As it stands now i will try to get that done.

But at least this lowered the anxiety levels a bit, knowing that an MD would feel ok with doing that diagnoses from images makes me think that he is at least "probably" right.

      Best regards

      1. ...I am so glad you were able to get an answer so quickly! You have to feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. I am so happy for you!

I tend to agree with your assessment. It seems as if your doctor would have insisted on an in-person exam if he saw something much more menacing. All signs point to good news for you!

Here is an article on seborrheic keratosis by Judy. It might give you a little more insight into your diagnosis.
