What are the three most important qualities in a good dermatologist and why?

Finding a good dermatologist can be a challenge. Many of us are now educated consumers in that we have an idea of what we are looking for in a good doctor. What about you?

  1. For me, they have to have empathy for what I'm going through. Demonstrating a true understanding of my concerns, fears, accomplishments, etc is key. Also, a sense of urgency if I call or send a message about having something I'm concerned about. I realize they have other patients but my dermatologists seem to be very responsive if I reach out to them. I actually have two dermatologists that I see. My regular dermatologist had found both of my melanomas and I truly feel she saved my life. After about 2 years of no melanomas (lots of biopsies) she suggested we roll in an additional dermatologist who works at a melanoma clinic in Boston. I now alternate my visits between them and it's great. Two different perspectives and backgrounds gives me peace of mind when they both see the same things. I highly recommend setting up a team like that if possible.

    1. That sounds great about the team you have assisting you. Thank you for sharing that. What a wonderful idea.

    2. Thank you for your reply. I like the idea of a team approach. Scott skincancer.net moderator

  2. I am looking for good bedside manner first and foremost. I also want a dermatologist at a treating hospital. Finally, I’m one of those that likes to see their academic credentials. Where they trained, etc.

    1. I think being empathetic is so important as this disease can be so traumatic. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Scott skincancer.net moderator

  3. Attentiveness, erudition, analytical mind, that is of course the main thing. Empathy in relation to the patient is certainly a good thing. But it is better to have a doctor who is cold-blooded, emotionless, but a highly intelligent professional who can solve complex problems and provide alternative solutions, not paying attention to our tears, than an empathic, sentimental, smiling doctor, but is unable to give either a competent explanation in medically complex issues, or the right method of treatment, or sound advice, but only standard memorized answers.

    1. I guess I would like the empathetic, smart one. Scott skincancer.net moderator

    2. Oh yes. Smart and empathic. And let these qualities be transmitted to each other by airborne droplets, and we'll be happy 😀
