The Basics Behind the Mask-and-Sunscreen Combo
I'm afraid I have fallen into the face-mask trap more than a few times lately. There is just something about the security of wearing it while shopping and to work that makes me forget what has become second nature. No. I’m not talking about the mask’s effectiveness in stopping the spread of communicable diseases. I am talking about the face mask as a barrier to ultraviolet light. I am certainly not proud of it, but I have been forgetful.
A new routine
Normally, my morning routine includes applying sunscreen prior to putting on my makeup and topping that with a powder that also contains an SPF of at least 30. Working and doing day-to-day activities now requires a face mask that covers most of my face. Due to that, I have changed my routine up quite a bit.
A false sense of security
In an effort to save time in the morning and simplify my day anywhere I can, I have stopped wearing makeup other than my eye makeup. After all, the only thing visible to my coworkers and students will be my eyes anyway. In making this time-saving move, I have often neglected to apply sunscreen. Not a smart move on my part.
Face masks don't necessarily protect from the sun
I think I've felt a kind of false sense of security lately knowing that my face would be covered. Sadly, not all face masks are created equal, and most do not contain protection against UV light. While they do offer a barrier between my skin and the sun, they don’t prevent all UV rays from penetrating and affecting my skin. In addition, in neglecting to apply my sunscreen, I was obviously leaving my forehead and the area just below my eyes completely unprotected. Honest mistake, but a potentially damaging one nonetheless.
The proof is in the tan line
I would love to believe that a simple layer of any fabric is enough to prevent a sunburn. Unfortunately, I know the facts all too well. Before I became an advocate for sun-safe practices following my own skin cancer diagnosis, I had more than one sunburn appear through my shirt. I have long since lost count of the number of times I would remove my shirt in the summer and note tan lines where my bra straps had been. It is entirely possible to have the sun’s rays reach your skin through your clothing. And it is just as likely to reach your face through your average face mask.
So...sunscreen it is!
It is still a priority to apply sunscreen even though our faces may be covered 90% of the day at work or while running errands. There are plenty of lightweight sunscreens available that don’t feel greasy or too heavy on the skin. While it might, at first glance, seem redundant to apply sunscreen in addition to a face mask, it’s quite necessary. Protecting any area not covered by the mask is the first priority, but it is also imperative to give the lower part of your masked face just as much protection.
Let's face it: this isn't ideal
Masks aren’t necessarily comfortable, and it can seem daunting to add a layer of sunscreen into the mix. That thin layer of SPF, however, is one you shouldn’t go without. Whether you are in and out of the mall or making a lunch-hour run to the corner store, you still need that UV protection. If you opt for a mask that contains a UPF of 50 or higher, don’t forget to apply a layer of sunscreen to the upper half of your face. Do as I say, not as I did those few times. I’m here to remind you so we both remember from now on!
