Should I cut my hair for surgery?

I have been diagnosed with basal skin cancer on my head. I have very long hair. Should I cut my hair prior to surgery?

  1. I'm sorry you're dealing with basal cell. You are far from alone in your battle. I know you're stressing right now. We're glad you found our community!

I haven't had basal on my scalp, but have known a few people who have. I don't think I would cut my hair prior to surgery. I think I'd wait it out and see how much shaving they will need to do and maybe after surgery cut it if I felt awkward. Hopefully the spot won't be too noticeable and having longer hair will help hide it as it heals. Wishing you all the best. Keep us posted on your recovery. April, Skincancer.net, Moderator

    1. Definitely don't cut it! I had one on the top of my head and they shaved a little piece around it. If they cut more and you want to even it out, you can decide later. Or leave it different lengths and people will think you're making a fashion statement.

      1. Thank you April and Ronni for your words of experience! @Chisand, have you had an appointment yet? Wishing you luck and check back when you can! - Nina, SkinCancer.net Team
