Can skin cancer ulcers heal on their own?

Background. I picked what I thought was a blackhead off my back. What was left behind was a 3-4mm ulcer. 2 weeks later the angry red mark has healed into a 2MM papule. Not oozing, doesn’t hurt or itch, it’s just there. Wondering if skin cancer would behave like this?

  1. ...that's a great question. I can't say that I have ever experienced anything like this with any of my skin cancers. Mine have all either been a mole or a barely noticeable flake of skin that refused to heal.

It might be worth having your dermatologist take a look at it. If that isn't possible, your family doctor might be able to do a quick biopsy for you. I am including an article on the types of biopsies.

    1. I don’t have an appointment until mid July. It’s definitely odd, so I want to get it checked out

    2. ...oh, good! I am glad you are having it checked out! I am keeping my fingers crossed that it is nothing and your doctor gives you the all-clear!

  2. Whenever something seems questionable and doesn't seem to heal like it should I make a call to my dermatologist. If I am not sure, then I go to the professional. I get bug bites a lot and they seem to heal, but when they don't I try to see the doctor. Hope this helps. Let us know how things have gone. Scott skincancer.net moderator

    1. yep. It’s still there, hasn’t changed at all. I have a derm appointment scheduled for the end of August. A derm took a look at some pics via tele-med and said it looked like a vascular defect, but I’ll go in to make sure.

  3. Thank you for following up with me. I think that going in to make sure is a great idea. How was your experience with tele-med? Let me know how things go in August. Scott skincancer.net moderator

    1. It calmed me down. I went down the internet rabbit hole and freaked myself out. Having a doc take a peak and tell me I shouldn’t be too concerned was helpful. That was 2 weeks ago. He wanted to look at some follow up pics this week, but like I said, it hasn’t changed at all, so I’m hoping they say the same thing. Then it’s an actual office visit at the end of August, and I’m hoping that’s uneventful. My mom has had a BCC in the past, but that just seems like more of an annoyance than incredibly scary.

      1. Thank you for the update. I understand about the Internet rabbit hole and trying to self diagnose. That can be rough. Hope things go well and let us how you are doing after your appointment on this thread. Scott skincancer.net moderator
