Should I apply fluorouracil even over broken skin?

Today is the 10th day of treating actinic cheilitis with fluorouracil. Lip is cracking, oozing, and bleeding. I was told to try it for 2 weeks. Should I apply cream even over broken skin?

  1. ...I am so sorry you are dealing with the discomfort that comes with the erosion stage--it definitely sounds like you have reached erosion. The cracking and oozing is always a sign that I am done.

The two-week suggestion by your doctor is pretty typical. However, many patients report reaching the erosion stage before their prescribed time is up.

I would advise you to touch base with your doctor via texted photos of your lip or schedule a Telehealth visit if possible. He/she will be able to guide you as far as how/where to continue applying the cream. My dermatologist always advises me to stop once the skin has begun to ooze and crack open.

I am attaching an article you might find helpful as you enter the erosion stage along with one on the healing phase. It can be the most challenging part of treatment. Hang in there, though. It moves quickly once you reach around day 3 without the cream.
