When is it a good idea to pull in a plastic surgeon for treatment? And how do you go about finding one that is familiar with skin cancers? Share your experiences:

I'm so glad I used a plastic surgeon for my facial melanoma. I would do it again in a heartbeat if necessary. I used a "regular " dermatologist for occurrences on other areas of my body on arm, hand, back, etc.

"I have to say my Mohs surgeon does a wonderful job hiding scars. They have a lot of schooling on that and are always learning new ways."
"Once I was diagnosed , people came out of the woodwork telling me who they used and I could see his work. He was in my plan. He had 5stars on my healthcare plan. Can hardly see anything now."
"My Mohs surgery was performed with a plastic surgeon ready just in case he is needed once the Mohs is complete. He did an amazing job but the Mohs surgeon also is highly skilled for the less invasive cosmetic procedures - always prepared and makes me feel more at ease knowing I’ll be taken care if regardless of outcome!"
"My dermatology office Mohs surgeon first the the plastic surgeon closed the wound on my cheek with great results"
"My 2 facial procedures done by Mohs specialist with minimal scars.
I know he has a plastic surgeon to go to of he feels he can't close it properly.
I don't know any plastic surgeons that do Mohs where I live."
"Yes. I only use a plastic surgeon. They have a huge connection with all the hospitals , labs to get instant results from MOHs, etc..they also are experts on face symmetry , bones, nerves, tissue . Skin cancer of any kind sends out roots. The plastic surgeon can remove with the least amount of damage. I have met oncology plastic surgeons who travel all over the world fixing post cancer facial deformities because the Drs who did the cancer removal was not a trained certified plastic surgeon. I saw pictures of the patients. The deformities, the scarring was horrible and these plastic surgeons said it did not have to happen to the patient . They said ANY skin cancer should only performed by a plastic surgeon because that is what they do."
"I used a plastic surgeon for the melanoma on my face and am so glad I did! It could have been devastating, and instead, it's barely noticeable."

"I have been fortunate with my face surgeries with dermatology that have specialize in facial plastic surgery. Over the years I've seen the difference with training. So far the last 4 years I've been with same and getting very good results once healed"
"You go to a specialist, skin doctor. They can remove in office. Most things. Will send away for results. Always get a 6 month check up. It's possible your family doctor can recommend a skin doctor/dermatologist."
"Most good Dermos have plastic surgery training. I had a MOHS on my forehead for squamous cell and early melanoma on my hamstring-wide area excision-and my hamstring scar looks way better. All about the skill of the surgeon"
"My first MOHS and reconstruction surgery was done by a Plastic & Reconstructive surgeon I used to work for. He does awesome work and is experienced with all types of cancer. After the same invasive type of cancer returned 7 years later in the same area, we decided that I would go to a well known cancer hospital that specializes in MOHS and has wonderful Plastic Surgeons on staff. I just had my third MOHS (different area on my face) and a flap reconstruction (5 days ago) and I know once it heals, it’s going to look great! For my face, I would never have a dermatologist do reconstruction. I will see my regular dermatologist/MOHS surgeon for any cancer elsewhere on my body though."
