Can common skin conditions be mistaken for skin cancer?

I’ve noticed that many common skin conditions- like fungal infections, scabies, eczema, or psoriasis - can sometimes look alarming and cause a lot of anxiety about skin cancer.

From what I understand, these conditions themselves don’t cause cancer, but certain skin cancers can occasionally resemble rashes, sores, or patches that don’t heal. This can make it confusing to know when something is harmless and when it needs medical attention.

I wanted to ask the community:

Have you ever mistaken a skin condition for skin cancer (or vice versa)?

What signs or changes made you decide to see a dermatologist or get a biopsy?

I’m hoping this discussion can help people feel informed without unnecessary panic, while still encouraging early checks when something looks unusual or doesn’t improve.
