No Sunscreen as a Kid, Mohs as an Adult

You know all those internet posts boasting about how “we did this as kids, and we did that as kids, and we survived just fine”? Well, I didn’t use sunscreen as a kid (I’m not sure it existed in the 1950’s), and all those sunburns came back to bite me in my old age.

Recently I’ve developed lesions on my forearm and forehead that turned out to be squamous cell carcinoma. I’ve had a couple of rounds of Mohs surgery to excise it. Not as bad as root-canal surgery (IMO), but still no treat. Will I need more of that surgery? I don’t know. All the sunscreen I put on now can’t undo all those years of unprotected skin in the sun.

Obviously, anyone reading this is probably in the same or similar boat as I am, so this isn’t really a warning. I’ll save that for my grandkids and urge my sister to get her skin tested.
